It allows our surgical team to continually compare outcomes on all types of surgical procedures with hospitals internationally. The combination of clinical data collected and STS outcome reports are used to monitor performance continually and drive improvement opportunities. Why review outcome reports?
Choosing a qualified hospital can be a daunting task, especially in conjunction with illness’s added burden. The media bombard healthcare consumers with articles and reports touting excellent and innovative care provided by hospitals nationwide. But how do consumers determine which healthcare provider will genuinely meet their critical and diverse needs? Outcome reports provide objective numerical proof instead of subjective, and potentially self-serving accolades provide accurate reflections of quality and value that other, less factual reporting methods may not. Additionally, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has recently developed a comprehensive rating system that allows for comparisons regarding Thoracic surgery quality among hospitals across the USA. Approximately 10% of US hospitals receive the “3 star” rating, which denotes the highest quality category.
In the analysis of our post-operative outcome data covering the period from July 2006 to December 2014, using the STS database as the yardstick, Our Surgeons found the thoracic surgery performance of our service in the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Network to lie in the highest quality tier, thereby notionally qualifying for an STS 3 star rating.
Therefore, we know for sure that our current surgical outcomes are well within accepted international norms, and we pledge to be on our guard and maintain the standards that we have voluntarily set for ourselves. It is the philosophy which drives us all in this service.
